AFTERCARE

Proper aftercare is crucial for maintaining the longevity and appearance of your hair extensions. Follow these guidelines to maximize the lifespan of your extensions and prevent damage. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

TOP TIPS FOR LONGEVITY

  • Wash with clarifying shampoo right before your fitting or refit appointments

  • Always blow-dry on a cool/medium setting to protect bonds

  • Ensure hair is at least 80% dry before using any styling tools

  • Tie hair loosely with a soft hair tie or scrunchie, especially at night

  • Apply hair oil daily on lengths and ends

  • Use heat protectant before styling and keep heat to a minimum

  • Use a conditioning mask once a week on lengths and ends

  • Wash and condition at least twice a week with sulfate-free products

  • Brush frequently using a soft bristle brush or extension-appropriate brush

PRE APPLICATION PREP

  • Wash your hair thoroughly with a clarifying shampoo as close to your fitting appointment as possible

  • Apply 3–4 scrubs of shampoo and rinse for at least 5 minutes to eliminate any product buildup & to ensure your hair is squeaky clean

  • Avoid: Conditioner or any other hair products before the fitting

  • Styling Tip: Hair should be blow-dried straight and straightened if needed

FOR BEST RESULTS

  • Clean hair ensures maximum bond life, so always wash your hair right before your fitting

  • Avoid trimming your natural hair between the consultation and fitting, especially blunt cuts. Ends can be tidied up during application or removal

AFTER APPLICATION

  • Adjustment Period: Bonds might feel tight for 2–3 days as they settle. Avoid tying your hair up for the first week

  • Styling Tip: Always tie your hair loosely with a soft hair tie, like a silk scrunchie, to minimize tension and breakage. These are ideal for sleeping and everyday styling

  • Sleeping : Hair should be loosely tied or braided for sleeping to avoid tangling.

WASHING

  • Timing: Do not wash your hair for 48 hours after fitting to allow the bonds to set

  • Frequency & Products: Wash and condition your hair at least twice a week using a professional hydrating shampoo as recommended

  • Conditioning: Apply conditioner throughout the lengths and ends, avoiding directly the bonds. Leave it on for at least 5 minutes for optimal results

  • Weekly Treatment: Use a conditioning mask on the lengths and ends once a week to lock in moisture. For best results, cover with a shower cap while processing

  • Detangling: Always detangle before washing. When washing, gently massage shampoo into the scalp without scrubbing or twisting the bonds

  • Rinsing Tip: Always rinse thoroughly to prevent buildup

  • Never: Wash your hair upside down. Keep your head upright

BRUSHING

  • Technique: Regularly brush starting at the ends, working upward through the length and gradually through the bonds and roots

  • Use: A soft bristle brush or an extension-appropriate brush, such as a nylon bristle brush

  • Bonds: Gently brush through each bond to prevent matting and tension. Use a soft bristle brush for this

  • Tip: Separate each bond with your fingers to avoid tangling

  • Weaves/Tapes: Avoid brushing above the attachment, but brush thoroughly around and below it.

BLOWDRYING & STYLING

  • Drying: Never let extensions dry naturally. Remove excess water by blotting (don’t rub) and blow-dry section by section using a cool heat setting

  • Pre-Styling Tip: Ensure hair is at least 80% dry before using any styling tools to prevent damage and maintain bond integrity

  • Heat Protection: Always apply a heat protectant before drying or using styling tools

  • Tip: Use the lowest heat setting to protect the bonds and prolong extension life

LIFESTYLE CONSIDERATIONS

Certain activities may affect the lifespan of your extensions, including:

  • Swimming, especially in salt or chlorinated water
  • Sauna and steam room use
  • High-intensity aerobic activities

Precautions

  • After exposure to moisture or sweat, dry your hair as soon as possible. Use dry shampoo to reduce oil between washes

  • Avoid tight hairstyles. Opt for loose ponytails or braids to minimize tension

Colouring

  • Colouring is at your own risk. Lightening is not recommended

  • If colouring, match the extensions to your natural hair. Blue or silver shampoo can be used to maintain color but must be applied away from the bonds

Holidays

  • Before You Travel: Ensure you’re familiar with the aftercare routine to avoid damage while away

  • Sun & Water Exposure: Keep hair covered in direct sunlight and avoid salt or chlorinated water, which can weaken bonds

  • Discolouration Warning: SPF, self-tan, and minerals in hard water may cause discoloration. Use Malibu hard water sachets if needed

EXTENSION MAINTENANCE

Individual Extensions

  • Cold Fusion Bonds: Last 3/6 months before requiring removal, retipping and refitting. Most clients are in the middle of this time frame

  • Micro Locks: Refit every 2/3 months

Tape Extensions

  • Refit Every 4–8 Weeks: A full removal is required before re-taping. Keep tapes in pairs if retaping at home

Weave Extensions

  • Refit Every 6–8 Weeks: Can be removed and refitted within the same appointment

Note:
All extensions should be removed by a professional.
